02 November 2008
While I was reading Onyx was playing in the yard and checking on me periodically. She was outside for about 4 hours today and is now wedged between the chair and me with her head on my shoulder snoring. She has grown so much in the past two months with a safe place to live and good regular food. I was guessing that she was probably about a year old around Labor Day but now I realize she wasn't much more than a kitten. I am sometimes surprised at how well she has domesticated herself, I really respect her survival skills considering how young and handicapped she was. I have learned so much from her about valuing and appreciating my life and examining my values and happiness. And from TJ about accepting the unplanned and unexpected.

I hurried out of the school to run home and watch all the election updates. As I was at the front gate I noticed the grey clouds of the cool front moving into the northern and western sky then I saw the sun resting on top of the pine trees on top of the high ridge. As I drove along the length of the ridge it was fascinating to see the clouds turn a pale pink and then the sun peeking through the burnt skeletons of pine trees from the forest fire two years ago. The sun slowly slid behind the trees and the clouds started turning a pale peach with brilliant golden edges until there was no more sun, just a wonderful pink sky with wispy peachy gold clouds. As I descended into the valley the sun popped back over the lower ridge for a last glance at the farm buildings on the east end of the valley who all stood proudly wearing windows of gold nestled into the embraces of the dark forest beyond them. After a quick look the sun vanished completely leaving behind the most glorious golden display among the clouds. And then I turned into town and it was night.
I may complain about coming home in the dark, but I forget these little gifts of Nature. I am so glad I don't live in a big city any more!

I just gave Onyx her first "pawdicure". I am so glad she is a forgiving soul because she is not too pleased right now. First, i brought TJ in for the night--he is not too fond of snow in his old age, and then she had to suffer the indignity of having her claws clipped just as they were growing out to be long enough to really attack the throw rugs(and my ankles). I can't believe how much she is growing. I think maybe she has grown into her tail. It isn't nearly so long as when she was a kitten. A couple of months ago I could pick her up with one hand but not any more. I think my cold medication is starting to work, i feel kind of loopy. I better get to bed. Til tomorrow.

teh mom--you are right the wet leaves are funny. She was out a few minutes ago and she would squat to smell the snow, backup shiver and shake her head and do it all over again. Right now she in "time out" in the bathroom because when TJ pawed on the door to come in she saw him and charged the door hard enough I heard her bang into the window. i guess if he is already in the house and she can't do anything about she will just ignore him but if he is outside wanting to come in everything is different. Therefore "time out"

As you can read I am still at home. I left about 9:30 to drive to work on messy roads and was blocked by the highway patrol and told in no uncertain terms to go back. So I did. Talked with one of my co-workers who was also turned back, but haven't yet heard from my supervisor.
Think I'll let Onyx out of jail and take a nap to warm up. I so hope I don't get a call to come in at noon. Many of the local offices are closing and I think the public schools might close at noon.

I knew TJ was a very mellow fellow, but I learned today what makes him assert himself. SNOW. He came in and took no sass from Miss Onyx. I was in the recliner under a down comforter, cuddling a box of tissues and he jumped (climbed) up into my lap. When she came to see what was going on in HER house she stretched up to the arm of the chair to look at us, TJ lifted his head from my shoulder and looked at her as if to say "suc.k it up and deal with it" put his head back down on my shoulder and started snoring in my ear. His asserting himself is OK, but not the snoring in my ear.
I've been napping, slugging down the orange juice, hot tea and Zicam all day. I slosh when I walk. I do feel better than last night but I think I will have an early shower and an early night. Catch you all later! Don't spend money, or at least give it a second thought.

Just got home from picking up TJs medication and had a very interesting/informative talk with the vet. She ask about Onyx and we did some calculations and figured she must have gotten pregnant at about six months which would make her a Christmas Kitten. She has grown so much the last two months with good nutrition, she still is a tiny thing compared to TJ. It was funny to watch her reaction to the snow (less than an inch) this morning. She would stick out her paw and pat at it then try to shake the "cold" off her paw. It took about three trips outside for her to decide that inside was the place to be. She's curled up in the middle of the bed right now, I didn't know she could curl up that tight.
Announcement: all the fur has grown back after Onyx's surgery, I'm sure as vain as she is she wouldn't want the world to see her shaved belly. I am now holding the camera to my face so she gets used to it (and hopefully will stop swatting at the wrist cord) and will allow me to take some candid shots. They won't be as good as the TJ photos, since my camera is not as good as my sister's, nor am I as good a photographer as my sister.
"The Tails of TJ and Miss Onyx" will have to wait to be written until I have time to go through the thread for the past six months and remember what I wrote.

I thought I was completely healthy, until I went to bed last night and started chilling and shivering--don't know why. I knew I didn't want to get out the heating pad then forget to turn it off. So after adding a couple more blankets and still feeling cold I got the brilliant idea of finding Onyx. Ten minutes after that tiny bit of fur curled up against my back, throwing off enough heat to warm the entire room I finally drifted off. I didn't sleep really well, but I got some rest. I'm going to hit the hay early tonight and she will be right beside me. I hate the lingering tail end of a cold that never seems to go away!
15 November 2008
Onyx update: A friend came over today and as she was parking in back she saw Onyx puffed up and hissing at a big yellow cat across the alley. Later in the day a big yellow cat showed up on the deck and TJ chased him off and Onyx came flying across the yard, her tail three sizes bigger than normal and chased him out of the yard and just sat at the back gate glaring at him. I kept looking for her wonder cape. I'm sure she thought she had one. I am afraid I may be living with the neighborhood "thug-ette". However, on a happier note as TJ was eating yesterday (he is a rather sloppy gourmet) Onyx slunk up (as much as she can slink with her mobility issues) to snatch a piece off the floor and TJ just stuck a paw out on her forehead and held her off and kept on eating. He did this twice, until she gave up and left. Maybe they are learning to tolerate each other better than I realize.
16 November 2008
Lord, I'm making myself hungry. I need to stop and call Onyx in. She has been strutting around the yard all day. I guess we all deserve to strut and preen a while when we have redeemed ourselves well.
19 November 2008
Just got home from being out of town overnight, to find I had over ten pages to read, and a tipped over trashcan and scattered contents all over the kitchen. Think maybe Onyx is a mite ticked off? As soon as I fed her she walked to the corner turned her back and ignored me. Of course, whenever I glanced at her she would stick her leg up in the air to clean her backside. I think maybe that is some form of cat insult.
For all you readers the friend who went with me bought a book at Border's--"Dewey: The small town library cat who touched the world" by Vicki Myron. It is starting out to be a really good read. The reviews call it "a five tissue" read. Can't wait to finish it.
Speaking of cats, I got your card Sharing. What I can't figure out is when Onyx smuggled in a photographer for her portrait shoot.
I'll have to continue tomorrow. Onyx has decided to forgive me and is currently snoozing on top of my hands on the keyboard and it is too hard to type with only two fingers and not disturb her.
20 November 2008
I have been forgiven. Onyx is currently on my lap and eyeing the cubbyhole in the desk. She has recently become a mouser, not the four-legged kind but the laser kind. When I cleaned off my messy desk top she discovered the cubbyhole which is only a paw swipe away from the mouse. Thank goodness the mouse is on a tether to keep it from banging on the floor. Several times I have come in and the mouse is dangling off the desk and she is curled up in her cubbyhole "asleep". Gldn I had to leave Onyx home alone for 33 hours, and that is all I did to tick her off. Extra food and water, her favorite blanket folded at the foot of the bed and I even left the radio on for some company. But, boy, did I get the cold shoulder when I got home.
21 November 2008
I have truly been forgiven. As I was typing a certain young lady came up to my side and stood up and leaned against the side of my leg, then she was leaning against my leg with her chest and her front legs reaching up to me. I could almost hear her say "up!" Sometimes I'm not too sure Onyx isn't a human toddler in cat's clothing. I have lived with many cats in my life, but none have had the "cattitude" Onyx has. She is truly a never ending story.
30 November 2008
I just finished cleaning the fridge so I deserve a break. Both cats followed (OK Onyx lead the way) me to the bedroom where my computer is and TJ climbed up on the bed to stretch out. Onyx is looking at him pityingly since he used the step stool to get up there. He is stretched out on his back waving his paw at me meaning "I'm ready for a belly rub." His belly rubs also include scratching his arm pits. When he has had enough on one side he will stretch out his other paw so I will scratch the other armpit. He then sticks his chin up for a chin scratch. He is on his back and just curling his toes in ecstasy. He is practically slobbering with joy. Onyx is sitting in the desk chair looking on with total disgust at his inelegant begging and his inability to show the proper dignity and disdain for human attention. Or maybe she is just jealous.
