01 October 2008
I'm being a very strong kitty mama this week. I have been letting Onyx out into the back yard for about an hour or so when i get home from work in the evenings. TJ just curls up in his cushioned chair and just watches her bounce around in the grass (and eating it). I worry and fret the whole time. So far she has come inside to eat when I call her. I don't think she knows her name, just that when i rattle the jar of kitty treats good things await.

Now to turn to "doting kitty mama" status. Onyx was watching the debate with me and when she needs a bit of attention she will start "petting" my face and especially my nose, I am fascinated by her paws, they are so delicate and soft. I am so used to TJ's monster paws and calloused pads that this is quite a change. I have lived with enough cats and kittens in my life that I expect a few accidental scratches here and there. I have NEVER been scratched by Onyx. I'm a little disconcerted by this, although very appreciative.

I was very brave this afternoon. I sat on the deck for a couple of hours visiting with BFF and let Onyx play in the yard. It is so funny to see her prance around the yard and leap after invisible (to me) bugs and moths. Of course, she would run back to the deck every ten or fifteen minutes to be petted and make sure we were still there. Due to all that fresh air she is one pooped kitty now! She is so sound asleep she didn't even move or awaken when I moved her from the dirty laundry basket to the bed.
One more load of laundry and run the dishwasher and I'm ready to face a new week. Oh, joy. Isn't it almost January?
Red2black I agree it would have been nice to know all the ins and outs before we needed the emergency "rescue". As to TJ he just lounges on the deck and rolls over to have his belly rubbed (if he is sure Onyx is not around). They still hiss and growl, but it is more sound than fury now. The colder it gets the more he comes inside. You are right it was only 3 months ago that Onyx arrived. Hard to believe.
I just discovered why there are kitty paw prints on the bathroom floor. Even though Onyx can't balance to drink out of the toilet she has learned to stick her paw in and lick it off. I filled her bowl in the kitchen with the "good" water (purified) but she wants the "pond scum" the city provides us with. Go figure!

I had such a wonderful day today. The first Monday of the month is awards day at assembly. I gave seven awards for outstanding or most improved performance. Afterwards when I was entering the documentation in permanent records I found the three of these young people had never received an award for accomplishments before in their life. Can you imagine being 23 and never being acknowledged for anything! I will be curious to see how the future behaviors will be.
I am tired and heading to bed to read a bit. Onyx already has the comforter warmed up for me --if she will share. The window is open a little and I can smell the neighbors woodstove. Fall is truly here!

I am learning so much this fall. I just learned Onyx purrs louder the closer she is to my face. I am still amazed at the way she "pets" me when she needs a little more attention and once she has my attention, after she pets my face a bit she will reach up and touch noses. Tonight TJ even came in and sat in the chair with me for a bit, Onyx was closed in the bathroom. Earlier she tried to take over his bowl of wet food and he actually growled and SWATTED at her and she backed away. In my book that is progress.

No snow yet, thank goodness! Just damp and cold. I'd like a couple of weeks before the wet/snow arrives. I can deal with, and kind of enjoy, feel invigorated by the cooler/cold temperatures. It also encourages TJ to come inside more and he even sat and snuggled with me for about half an hour--after he verified the Onyx was not anywhere around.
Had a lazy weekend listening and learning about the financial situation. The thing I must keep in mind is that this crash is just the beginning. All the assistance programs in the world will take time to trickle down, the problems have yet to hit all of the other sectors of the economy. I read MP's thread on the "New View on Money". I appreciated what Honeyliness and Nitza had to say. I worry about the knee jerk fear some are experiencing. I also want to give every one here and on WIRR a pat on the back. We are already so far ahead of the curve. I hope we are all able to keep our heads and carry on in such a positive way.
Since I have a three day weekend I am doing a major "cook-off". I plan to fix and freeze enough so I won't have to cook much this fall. The house smells sooo gooood!

sharing the weather here has been fabulous this weekend, cool nights and warm days. I think it is to cool a bit and be damp next week. But none of the white stuff yet! I would be happy if it lingered like this until December, but then I need snow. Onyx is really enjoying the nice weekends because I let her out to play in the backyard for a couple of hours. Of course she came in and headed straight for the bedroom leapt and crash landed on the bed in the midst of the clean and folded laundry. Once there she proceeded to shove aside all the cotton towels and t-shirts 'til she found the silky dress shirts and nightwear, kneaded it around to her satisfaction and proceeded to nap for the next three hours in total contentment. TJ stretched up to look at her sort of shook his head and went back to lay down next to the bowl that would contain new food in a few hours. They are tolerating each other a bit more, but there is still a lot of growling going on.

Here comes an Onyx story. I had to come home to get some documents related to my retirement at lunch and found the small throw rug from the bathroom in the hall. Now this has been happening several days now, sometimes at the east end of the hall and sometimes at the west end of the hall. I figured she had dragged it there to sleep on. Oh. no, no, no. I came home to find her "surfing" down the hall. She would race down the hall, leap onto the little rug and go sliding about three or four feet. Then starting at the other end of the hall and she would surf it back the direction she had come from. Who would have thunk?

I think we may be in for a weather change here. There were high wind warnings today, and did we ever have them. Onyx was in the backyard for about two hours chasing the leaves that were frisking and dancing across the yard. Considering her handicaps I was amazed at some of the leaps and twirls she executed chasing the leaves. Of course, when she came in she staggered off to the bedroom, leaped to the bed really clumsily and crashed all afternoon. She didn't even waken when TJ came to check things out. Once he figured she was down for the count he took advantage of all the lap time he could get! That was when I realized it was as cold as it was, he doesn't become a lap cat until it is getting cold outside.
I think I'll have a hot shower, move Onyx from the exact center of the bed and join her.
***********************
Time to move Onyx and hit the hay. I have decided to offer her skills to play the cat the next time the Russian Ballet does Peter and the Wolf. She definitely has the skills and think of how much they would save on costuming.

I got home from the courthouse to find a young lady gleefully jumping from the deck into a big pile of leaves that had been blown into a sheltered corner. Try to imagine a dusty black cat jumping full spread eagle into a two foot pile of fall leaves, then she ran back up onto the deck to do it again a couple of times. TJ, of course, just sits in the cushioned glider watching all this activity with no plans for joining in. Once again the morning excitement has worn her out and she is curled into a small ball basking in the sun beaming through the south facing French doors. She may not move for hours.
