QOTW- I have put a lot of thought into this and I think I am happiest that Onyx decided to join our household. Her outlook on life and joy in the world around her and totally not being hampered by what many would would consider a handicap or imperfection. I have been taught so much by having her around. (Newbies- Onyx is a kitten with a mobility handicap that my 18 y.o. cat TJ adopted last July. I guess now she would be called a cat, she has grown SO much!)
08 January 2009
I am making a pot of chili to freeze for week after next when I will no longer have a stove for who knows how long. Smells wonderful but I won't be eating any tonight. My BFF just found out this is the last night "Marley and Me" will be in town, so therefore I will be eating popcorn for dinner. I think it is a law. I am so excited to be going to a movie on a school night!
Little Miss Onyx is driving me nuts. She doesn't want to come inside. Not that I blame her, it was 64*(18*C) today. Of course it is forecast to be 12*(-11* C) tomorrow, so therefore she will seldom come out from under the covers on the bed. She has learned to nudge the comforter aside and climb up the side of the mattress and end up under the comforter.
She has been outside so much today I probably won't see her once I do get her inside. She prances and paws at the door to get out and as I watch her dash out into the sun I am so proud to see her fur so shiny and black and well cared for, then she runs for the first pile of dirt she can find and just rolls and rolls. Soon this dusty brown little creature will come up to the door to see if I am watching, I am sure. She just peers inside and smiles, even her dusty whiskers quiver she is having such a good time. It is so dry here that the dust is like powder and after a bit she will give a mighty shake and a cloud will surround her. She reminds me of Pigpen from the Snoopy comic strips.
The movie starts in about 15 min. I need to prepare a bottle of water to smuggle in. I will buy their popcorn, but not their water. Later. This is so exciting!

This evening I have been doing one of my "Acts of Frugality". I had a couple of old sheets that were worn and soft that I tore up for napkins/handkerchiefs/jelly bags depending on the amount of wear. Onyx thought this was some new game invented just for her entertainment. She jumped and twirled and leaped so much I doubt she will want to settle down to sleep tonight. She is still guarding her pile of remnants, maybe she is afraid TJ or some other enemy will swipe her pile of preciousness. I keep forgetting that she is still pretty much a kitten and can create "play" out of anything.
22 January 2009
Today I have been "kid proofing" the house. Yesterday Onyx discovered the joy of fringe and tassels and strings and things. Today I had to make sure all fringe and tassels and strings and things were safe. As in her not destroying the house at 2am, like last night.
It was a balmy 64*(18*C) here today so I put her outside while I was working inside, when it was time for her to come inside, I stepped out where she was sunning herself, she leaped up and started waddling away from me-fast! From the back she looked just like a toddler running away from mom, just because she could. A toddler wearing a puffy pair of black velvet diapers. When she got to the end of the deck she just turned around and laughed at me, I am sure. Then allowed me to catch her and started purring loud enough to hear in the next county. She worked so hard at playing she is now snoring on the bed.

TJ's revenge! He got back at all the invaders of his space. He sprayed their wet/dry vac then peed on the tarp they threw over their tools in the basement. That could have been Ms Onyx. TJ is getting brave enough to hunker down in the hallway and glare at them and every now and then hiss and growl. Ms Onyx has just been chasing dust bunnies all day and hiding under the bed or in the basement, much to 10 y.o. Bucky's dismay. He has taken quite a fancy to her and she will have nothing to do with him.
Both cats have closely inspected all tools and cables, I think they could give lessons to OSHA inspectors.
25 January 2009
We have had a -60* change since midweek and it is hard to get used to. I was snuggled warm and comfy in my comforter cocoon last night and Onyx jumped and landed on my face and burrowed beneath the comforter and made a nice warm heating pad most of the night. Until she got up to make her nightly inspection tour of the house. By the time she returned I was drifting back to sleep. She made her customary crash landing on the bed, bounced around and started complaining quite insistently. I finally realized the comforter was tucked snuggly around me and she couldn't wiggle under. I really debated with myself about letting all that cold air in that would come with her. I eventually scooped her in and she immediately became a "massaging" heating pad. I have never had a cat that vibrates as much as she does when she purrs or is happy. I finally got up this cold morning, but she is still snuggled under the comforter. What she doesn't know is that TJ is on top of the comforter only about a foot away from her.

The kitchen crew is here working on the framing of some of the new energy efficient windows and doors. Earlier we sketched out the placement of the elect. outlets and rough framing the pantry. I have decided to go with commercial kitchen pantry shelves. It might cost about $200 more but will be much better in the sanitation and upkeep areas. They were planning out what is left to do and are thinking we MIGHT be done in March. I sure hope so. The kitties are even getting used to strangers in their space. Today they inspected the tools while we were all talking, and ran inside and outside a couple of times in front of strangers. They are even staying in the same room without fussing in order to stay out of the way. I will count that as progress!
I am starting to notice the dust settling over everything, but I am not going to let it bother me. It is just part of the joy of remodeling. I figure when they are done I am going to hire a lady I know to do a deep clean of the whole house. i think I might even hire her on a semi regular basis. My arthritis makes some cleaning difficult.
Boy does the wood stain stink!

Oh, I made a terrible mistake this evening. I let Onyx go outside for about 30 minutes. She came in fired up and started at the back door, bounded across the kitchen around the construction mess through the dining room, crashed into the wall, picked herself up galloped down the hall, dashed across the bedroom, levitated onto the bed, wrestled with MY pillow, tumbled off the bed, leaped upon the back of my desk chair, back down the hall, into the dining room through the kitchen cabinets stored in the corner, zoomed through the kitchen, stumbled up the loft stairs, dived under that bed, back down to the back door and then repeat. I'm tired just listening to her and picking up stuff she knocks over. TJ just cowers under the chair staying out of her way. My one hope is that she doesn't decide we need a play date at 3 am.
27 January 2009
Onyx update--She hardly moved a muscle overnight. This morning she demanded to go out, then fell all over herself trying to get away from the cold. Left her breakfast bowl, rushed back to the bedroom and climbed up under the comforter and is now just a lump in the middle of the bed.

It is time to watch NCIS. I go into the den to my favorite comfy chair and whom do I find all comfortably ensconced, Onyx! She has tried to take over my pillow and now my chair! We are going to have the conversation about sharing again. Maybe someday it will take.
29 January 2009
The electricians are STILL here. I can't imagine what my bill will be like. Onyx is under the guest bed demolishing dust bunnies this time. I may never have to dust under beds again. Wonder where she will go when the plumber arrives for his stint?
