In following the news, both on-line and via the television, about Sunday's operation and outcome this one quote would not go away:
"We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood.
"We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We ask God to offer him mercy with the true believers and the martyrs."
It appeared at the bottom of a list of world figures' response to the killing - and it came from the head of Hamas. However I noticed when I went back to double check it that MSNBC had removed it from the original article.
Why?
Could it be that the media believes we are so stupid as to think that there would be no dissent to this action? Of course there will be factions that will not believe he is dead. Or that his burial was conducted according to Islamic Law. There will be conspiracy theories and speculation about who knew what and when - after all, if there are really people in this world who vehemently deny the Holocaust ever happened then why would we think another set of people would not turn this event into yet another conspiracy theory?
However I also believe there will be things that the public is not told, or if the information is released it will be decades from now. I understand why they do this. Most of the time this type of information does nothing more than create more tension in an already high anxiety situation. For instance, I find it inconceivable that no-one in the Pakistani military or government didn't know bin Laden was living in their midst. I know that country is not considered the most technologically sophisticated in the world but give me a break!
The 12 foot high walls, security, relatively obscene display of wealth for that area, proximity to the military training academy, not to mention the complex tribal system and alliances in that region ... and no one even asked?? Yeah right.
See, I have my own conspiracy theories and have had for some time. For a while I could realistically believe that bin Laden had been dead for several years, but this information was kept suppressed so as to not create a martyr the extremists would rally around.
Guess that one was incorrect. Oh well, moving on.
I still find it highly unlikely that neither the Pakistani nor Afghan military forces did not know EXACTLY where Osama was at any given time. And I think our military believed that as well. Which is why they didn't tell anyone outside the US about what was going to happen and when. Much easier to say "Sorry" later than ask for permission. Besides I truly believe that each time in the past we have done the courteous thing and let either of these two governments/military leaders know - even an hour in advance - that multiple "someones" alerted bin Laden and his leaders. Giving them time to move across another border until things cooled down again.
These recent events, while somewhat of a relief in the short term, still make me uneasy. I think parts of al Qaeda will try to cause harm in the U.S. or Europe in retaliation. Some will try to deify this hate filled maniac who even his own family cut off relations with long ago.
Closer to home it creates mixed feelings about our President. It is not secret that I am NOT a fan of Barack Obama and probably never will be. A part of me is actually rather amazed that he had the cojones to actually approve this operation. I still think he is a weak pacifist at heart and this may just be an aberration of leadership. I also am not looking forward to the 2012 election where no doubt this one decision will be touted as his "greatest achievement" while the litter of broken promises and inaction will be conveniently forgotten.
On a more personal note - as I watched the news coverage on Sunday my thoughts could not help but turn in a very specific direction.
Redhawk.
I have not heard from him in months. Was he there? Would this now put to rest his seemingly suicidal need to return to the region?
Another post for another time.
