I should probably go out and bring TJ Kitty inside. There is a summer rental adjacent to the back of one of my lots that has people with two mini pinscher dogs. There is a kennel so the dogs get to spend a lot of time outside. Right now TJ Kitty is sitting about one foot outside the kennel just looking at the dogs. The blue jay that lives in my yard is sitting on the top rail of the fence and one of the neighborhood squirrels is hanging upside down on the tree next to the kennel. Needless to say the dogs are about to go nuts. If I ever have a dog I want one that is at least as big as his bark. These two little rat dogs are about irritating me enough to go out and break up the party. Tonight no one is talking but the dogs, boy is it annoying when the squirrel and the blue jay join in. Oddly enough TJ Kitty just sits there quietly egging everyone on , I think.
When I went out to get TJ Kitty he was sitting innocently on the deck rail as if he had been patiently waiting for hours. As if.

Can cats be altruistic? There is a stray, young female cat hiding out in my back shed that is handicapped somehow. Her front paws run like a cat and her back paws sort of hop like a rabbit. Since TJ Kitty is so old I monitor his eating habits closely and he has been eating only a few b*i*t*e*s of his evening food and leaving the rest for later. Tonight I found him lounging about five feet away from his bowl facing down one of the neighborhood males (one who I know nailed her last weekend) and the little female was eating what TJ had left. TJ watched her and made no move to stop her. I was afraid to open the door to put out more and scare her away. After she licked the bowl clean and moved away from the door, I did set another bowl of food out. TJ ate some and she didn't run any farther than the other side of the deck. I'll check later to see if there is any food left.
The bowl is empty and she is by the bowl and TJ is lounging several feet away. Looks like I need to get more cat food if he has adopted her.

SES: LOVE the cat experience. I needed the chuckle tonight. I would adopt her also if TJ has. Of course I am the one that called my DF from work telling him a really cute kitten had wandered into the school (VERY bad part of town also) and needed a home. (this was 9 years ago and he was only a DBF at that time) DF asked if he had a say. I of course said "Well no, but I thought I would let you know." I got the kitten when my other cat had bladder cancer and they were very cute together after the initial period. She would bring my older cat toys to play with.

My neighbors have the noisy little rat dogs visiting again. I hope this does not become a regular event. I can't complain too much, I did catch TJ Kitty strolling the length of the kennel about 8" from the fence with the blue jay perched on the top rail (8') of the kennel, and both of the rat dogs barking their heads off. Of course, when TJ came running home his expression was that of total innocence! You can't convince me he doesn't know what he is doing.
16 July 2008
Update on TJ Kitty’s adoptee. She is brave enough to come up on the deck where TJ is fed and finish anything he has left for her. She will even look through the door at me even if I am moving around, but she scampers off if I open the door to put out a bowl of dry kibble. Sometimes she will come back later when I am safely on the other side of the window. She is such a little thing and so cute and such a shiny black coat. If we ever become friendly enough to give her a name I am thinking of Onyx.
**************
Just checked the deck and as soon as I opened the door there was a black streak from under the steps to the middle of the yard where she just sat and watched me. At least she is watching from a closer distance. Man is it difficult to gentle down a feral cat. I don't remember it being so hard with TJ. Of course, he was born under the deck and his mother kept the litter close to the free and abundant food supply. All I can do is keep trying.
17 July 2008
Since I was so late getting home TJ Kitty was quite adamant about being FED RIGHT NOW! Not only was he waiting, little Onyx was waiting at the edge of the deck-just watching. But watching at a closer distance. Maybe I am making progress. We'll see if she comes up for dinner soon. It is now 8:00 and she is still just watching the deck. Maybe she chooses to eat at a more fashionable (later) hour.
******************
For some reason my brain won't shut down tonight so I'm still up and pacing. As I went past the deck door I saw Miss Onyx stretched up to the cushion on the glider where TJ likes to sleep. It was too dark to see if he was in residence. I wonder with her handicapped back legs if she can't jump UP, I've only seen her jump DOWN from the deck. I took EoG's suggestion and when I showered tonight I used an old towel so that it will smell like me and then I am going to fold it up and place it on the floor of the deck just in case she can't jump up. I did check the food bowls and the two or three tablespoons of wet cat food TJ had left from earlier was gone and there was quite a dent in the dry food, too. I just hope she is the one eating it and not him or one of the other neighborhood cats.
19 July 2008
I have such wonderful news. I just have to share. Miss Onyx is just over a year old, has her shots and has been SPAYED! I am so glad. I met my neighbor at the pharmacy and we visited and I got the scoop from her. I think she is the designated "Cat Lady" of our neighborhood. She has SEVEN indoor cats! I love cats but SEVEN? Indoors? I can't imagine that much cat litter! Anyway we got some new neighbors move in down the block about three months ago and Onyx ran away from them and won't go home. Suzi, my neighbor, says if I keep Onyx (or get her to stay) she won't say a word. Evidently the new neighbors have a handicapped son and I wonder if he inadvertently abused Onyx (her name used to be Little Kitty, come on give her a name with some dignity) Suzi has seen Onyx on the deck with TJ during the day while I am at work. So I know she is eating some and getting water. Suzi and I both worry about her because she is so skinny and has cerebral palsy (CP). Now I know why she moves the way she does. I thought that might be the case when I first saw her because I had worked at a school that specialized in students with CP ages ago. But knowing she has been spayed is a big relief. I just wish she wasn't so skittish. At least she isn't completely feral, of course she might have even worse issues to deal with.
20 July 2008
Breakfast update: I think I'm making progress with Onyx. When i take the food out to the deck and talk to her across the yard she stays curled up in the grass next to the cat door into the shed and watches me. A week ago she would dash into the shed when I would step outside, all I would see was a black tail disappearing into the shed. Perhaps I'm being optimistic and it is just hot in the shed. I prefer to think she is beginning to trust me, at a distance, a little more.
21 July 2008
Just went out on the deck to leave my nightly deposit of dry cat food and Onyx flew out from under the deck and skittered across the yard but when she turned back to look at me and listen to me she stopped about three feet closer than yesterday. As long as she makes it to staying on the deck and tolerating me by Christmas before bad weather sets in.
22 July 2008
Onyx Update: I saw her frisking (as much as she can) around the yard early this morning and by the time I got to the kitchen she was lounging on the deck with TJ and didn't even run until I opened the door with TJ's breakfast and meds. Even then she only ran about 20 feet away. This evening I saw her again return to the deck, sadly it was before I had put out the nightly supply of dry cat food and scared her again. But I choose to think this is progress. Tomorrow is always another day.
23 July 2008
Onyx update: she is not running as far and EoG every time I sit on the deck and am not feeding TJ she sees him come running to be petted or to climb up in my lap to show all his itchy places that need attention. I think now I just need more patience and to remind myself I AM making progress.
24 July 2008
Earlier tonight after the storm let up, I was on the deck because it smells soo good after a rain and shortly TJ was winding around my feet wanting attention (I thought) Nooo! He demanded the towel to wipe the wet off of him especially his paws. (He knows one is not supposed to get wet all over if it can possibly be avoided. You should hear the lectures I get from the other side of the shower curtain). Anyway, all the time I was giving him care and attention Onyx was watching from under the ramp onto the deck about twenty feet away. After I poured out the nightly kitty chow and went inside it wasn't more than twenty minutes until she showed up for dinner, with TJ lounging beside her as she ate.
She sees me off to work every morning from about twenty feet away-I'm sure she is baffled by TJs desire to put cat hair all over my slacks before I leave. Sharing I think you are right, she has given him a new lease on life. In fact I am sure of it. A couple of nights ago TJ, who will never stay inside when it is warm outside; came in at night and stayed in, on my bed snoring, flat on his back, paws in the air all night long! Didn't want out until about 4:30 am. I keep reminding him that he in an "old gentleman" not some young kitten who can stay out and play all day and night.
25 July 2008
Onyx update: When I got home I forgot to talk to her as I walked to the house and as I stepped onto the deck she flew out from under the deck and stopped to glare at me from about twenty feet away for disrupting her nap. Within an hour she was back curled up on the steps. As soon as she has eaten I might try to go out and talk to her. We will see how far away she will go this time. We will see what will happen when I am around the house and deck more this weekend. I guess if she is staying I will have to get more cat food. Oh, well, I'll just drive less than I already was. It can't be more costly than gas.
**************
I think I may have figured out why Onyx lingers around the deck. There is a long ramp I had built for my mom for her ease of access when the steps became too difficult and I noticed when Onyx is not in flight mode she uses it too. Maybe she does have problems going up steps. After Onyx finished eating I was able to slide the door completely open and talk to her for a bit before she fled. Of course she is only about twenty feet down the walk monitoring the deck. Maybe next time I can actually step out on the deck.
When I think about it we are making amazing progress, I only started feeding her a couple of weeks ago.
27 July 2008
Onyx update: The little lady came onto the deck to eat out of the dry food bowl in broad daylight. I walked past the door (glass) two or three times and I know she saw me but she just sat there and looked at me. When she finished I opened the door a crack to talk to her and she didn't run! When she left she strolled (hobbled) across the deck and down the ramp and back to the shed where she lay down in the shade and just watched me. She did all this without TJ there to run interference. No panicked streak of black fur across the yard today. Oh, she has the most beautiful green eyes and the sweetest face. I guess progress can be measured in millimeters.
***************
I am so excited !!! I was sitting on the deck and Onyx came around the corner of the house without seeing me and walked toward the deck. She noticed me when she got to the bottom of the steps, maybe seven feet away, and just sat there not running away, she even lay down and watched me even to the point of closing her eyes. She didn't even run when I got up to come in or when I put out the bowl of cat food. Wasn't even five minutes after I came in that she came up and started eating. Take three bites and checked me out on the other side of the glass, take three more bites and check me out. Then when she was done she just curled up on the rug for a nap. Closer to success every day!!
28 July 2008
I remembered to start talking to Onyx as soon as I got out of the car tonight-and no one was home! They both showed up about an hour later(at feeding time). As I stepped outside the big neighborhood bully tom cat was crouching about three feet away from Onyx and TJ was perched on the top step, I was waiting for a fight to break out. Onyx just ignored the bully and strolled(hobbled) toward the deck. She wouldn't come onto the deck while I was there -BUT SHE DIDN'T RUN!!! I yelled at the bully and he ran off and she totally ignored the yelling. Success sure is sweet, but slow in coming sometimes.
29 July 2008
I haven't spent a penny tonight. Too scared to. I raced a storm cloud home, parked and started talking to Onyx (who made no appearance). Started to check on the weather channel so I would know what to expect. About ten minutes later the weather alert came on. Five more minutes and it started to rain and hail (pea sized) I stepped out onto the deck to watch. The area closest to the house has about a twelve-foot square area covered with a fiberglass awning. As I was watching Onyx burst out of the shed in a mad dash for the deck. I think she was looking for TJ to keep her safe. He wasn't home yet so she dashed for the bushes. Then back into the shed despite the noise. She was just in time. The skies opened and dumped rain and hail up to quarter sized hail. Some parts of the county had golf ball sized hail. All this from a stationary storm cloud. It hailed steadily almost 35 minutes. After it stopped I had a six-inch deep pie of hail on the deck. I haven't had the courage to check my car yet. I may have to christen her "Dimples". Due to massive road work, I haven't been able to use the garage for the past two weeks and probably not for another month, Grrr.
As soon as it stopped TJ came home dripping-literally- and couldn't wait to get inside and be dried off. After he had been inside for about half an hour he screwed up the courage to crawl out from under the bed and venture outside. He hadn't been out more than ten minutes before Miss Onyx joined him for dinner. Due to the stress of the evening I set out an extra can of wet food. She only vanished about five minutes before she was back chowing down. Sharing, I think you may be right that she has selected the deck as her safe place. She sort of even tolerates me, as long as I know my place.
30 July 2008
I think the storm has really upset and confused Onyx. She was on the deck waiting for breakfast this morning. Of course she dashed off when I went out to set the bowl down. Then this evening I was on the deck and going inside before she remembered she was supposed to flee at the sight of me. Then she only ran about six feet away. This time when I put out the food she just dashed to the other side of the deck and when I went inside she did a big full length cat stretch that got her about 1.5 feet closer to the bowl of cat food. After about five minutes, and a couple more stretches, she had stretched her way over to the food. Of course, she kept a steady eye on me the whole time she was eating. I'm beginning to think she doesn't know when to be feral and when to be friendly.
31 July 2008
Sharing I guess maybe you should add Onyx to my bio. I'm just not sure if she is my furbaby or if she is TJ Kitty's furbaby. She will come onto the deck and eat in broad daylight now-especially if TJ is there. But not if I am there--YET!
