On Saturday, September 26th, Anne and I met up once again with Ruth and Theron at their home in Arlington and headed south to Carver, MA for the annual Renaissance Faire (their home page is at: www.kingrichardsfaire.net/)
We had asked Maeve to join us but she had another commitment. The weather turned out to be near perfect for a day of historical fun and farce - about 68 degrees and mostly sunny.
This Faire boasts some things I have not seen in other venues including jousts with real horses and players who can actually be hurt during the process, and a large cat show. And I do mean ....LARGE cats. They have a Liger (Lion father / Tiger mother) named Hercules who weighs in at about 800 lbs and can stand over 10 feet tall. Anne was fascinated with these critters and all the other tigers types they had on hand.
After the Big Cat Show we started to wander the Faire grounds and do some window shopping for a while - after all where else can you find weasel pelts for clothing or quivers, hundreds of broad leather straps with buckles waiting for you to determine where the holes should be punched, watch a shirtless man forge iron tools and eat a roasted turkey leg that would make Henry the VII proud?
Add to that a wonderfully funny and clever stage show called "Bite Me: A vampire love story" with great parodies of popular and familiar songs, and then a bawdy review by Dash's Dames: Favorite Wenching songs. They stated they were PG - but they really were R ... and incredibly funny!!
I also had a chance to visit one of my favorite herbalists who has a shop at the Faire each year and stock up on some things I was running low on: Horehound, Penny Royal, Black Cohosh and Woodruff. And what a great opportunity to take a picture of Anne in the stocks !! Hmmm, perhaps her parents would like to invest in one of these .... just kidding!!!!
It was a long day but wonderful. We got to see the last joust of the day which was a fight to the "death" and had beautiful horses decked out with bright colored gear, and the jouster's accuracy with their lances was so impressive. And we were able to get some Christmas gifts purchased.
