Well, Anne survived her first real week of school relatively unscathed. I say “relatively” because she is NOT enjoying the amount of homework given out by her Biology, Math & English teachers. Though, from my perspective, it is not that much – surely not as much as I was doing at her age. Just another sign I think that speaks to the problems with how we teach and raise our kids.
But I digress yet again –
On Friday night Anne had been invited to attend her first American football game as her high school team opened their season, unfortunately they were crushed 35-12 but that is another story. No, what really bothered me was the “friend” she supposed to meet – Arianna. The game was scheduled to begin at 07:00 pm and she had spoken to her friend who said they should meet at the ticket window at 07:15 pm.
Fortunately for Anne I am not one of those “toss-them-out-of-the-truck-while-it-is-still-moving” sort of chauffeurs. So I pulled the truck over while she went to locate her friend. When she was not there Anne tried calling her, then texting her with no response. I asked Anne if she wanted me to wait with her and she nodded, I can understand. I am not all that at ease in a large group of strangers either. Well we waited, and waited, and waited. Having gotten one text back saying she was “on her way” we waited some more.
This car pulled up around 08:20 pm, after the half-time show had already started. And I can not put my finger on exactly WHAT made me flare like a mama lion about this girl, her girlfriend and the 19 or 20 year old driver – but something bristled to life inside me. This girl did not even once apologize for being so late – I honestly thought they were going to deliberately stand Anne up.
Oh well, instead of having a couple of hours home alone I got about 40 minutes before Anne called to have me pick her up. We shall see how it goes next weekend when she is to meet a different friend. And I plan on keeping a close eye and ear on this other girl as well, something in my gut is telling me to be very very careful about how much time Anne spends with her. However it is not something I want to bring up with Anne just yet. The surest way to make a friend all that more desirable is to openly criticize them.
We awoke Saturday to truly uninspiring weather. It had been raining hard most of the night and showed no signs of letting up anytime soon. A good day to do inside things and errands. So off to Beadles (a great store for beads and charms), then a pop in to my local quilt fabric store for batting, over to The Garrison House for a small quilt show (where we ran into a Guild member and I got to start teaching Anne about the differences between a blanket and a quilt), then off to the grocery store before heading home.
I decided to forgo the banjo and fiddle contest this year – the event had been moved to inside the high school auditorium and at this point all I really wanted was a NAP! So we spent the rest of the day puttering around the house, finishing laundry, reading etc.
My friend Ruth had sent me information regarding an event being put on by The Audubon Society in Rhode Island: A Raptor Weekend. So up we get Sunday morning and drive into Arlington to meet up with Ruth & Theron for the drive to Warren, RI
I thought it was great! See the pictures at the link I attached below.

Anne also seemed to like seeing these hunters up close and personal, but she really liked the small education center attached - as witnessed by her portrayal of Jonah and her tender moment with a harbor seal towards the end of the photo album I linked above.
However, one thing that was not as much fun for ME was the side trip we took on the way home. It really was past my lunch time, and it seems Theron was craving Swedish Meatballs - so we stopped at "The big blue box" which I found out was another term for IKEA. Ruth has been talking about getting me into an IKEA since they opened this store in Massachusetts. But I am not really a normal American woman - I am not that "into" shopping.
Lunch in the cafeteria was okay, but I should have not made mention of the fact I was still looking at desk options for the guest room. And the way the store is set up it is designed to not make it all that easy to just go to the department you want. By the time we finally DID get to the right "area" I had a pounding headache and was on overload. Too much stuff, too many lights, too many people ... too much furnishings in styles I found completely uninteresting or even downright ugly.
Ah well - we finally did escape. Though I was the only one who felt that way I am sure.
