Birthday Boy
Today is TJ's 19th birthday. He just had his birthday dinner with Onyx as his only invited guest. They each got a bowl with a can of Tender Vittles in it. TJ dived into his food gobbling it down in his usual messy way with bits landing on the floor around him and him not slowing down to even notice them. Onyx was politely nibbling away on her food savoring the rare treat, until TJ notices his bowl is empty. He then pushes her aside to eat half of her treat until he is full and walks away. Then she was allowed to finish her bowl and clean up after TJ around his bowl.
I guess they have finally come to accept each other. When I think about it, it is mind blowing that he is that old considering he is a 75% outside cat. That is what, 133 years in people years?

Onyx update
It is cold here today. Less than 50*(10*C)at 9am. It was much cooler last night, so I got out the winter comforter. When i got it out Onyx was curled up asleep in her basket. I had just taken the comforter out of the plastic case and set it on the bed, when Onyx was dive bombing the bed rolling around on the comforter, pulling it around her, "fighting" with it and hiding in it. She was just like a little kid rediscovering a favorite long lost toy.
I pulled her off so I could spread it out and she was bouncing around the room, came up behind me and hugged my knee, flew back onto the bed and burrowed a tunnel under the part of the comforter i had smoothed out, looked out from her hiding place and just grinned at me. She spent the rest of the evening climbing the side of the bed under the comforter then across the bed and out the other side, looking so pleased with herself for figuring out this new(old) game.
Of course, when it was time to get up and make the bed this morning she was a little reluctant to haul herself out of her cozy nest. However, she did. But now there is a lump in the middle of the bed that I am sure will soon come out with a tail and a smile.

SES_, Too warm still here to bring out the heavy comforters, but since you've got the cooler evenings, I'm sure we will too, within four days or so. What a cute picture of that Miss Onyx! She's still young enough to bring out the kitten in her at will. She remembers the comforter fun! Gosh. What a difference a year has made. She is-at least in her mind- the captain of her wonderful household and shows you daily how at home she feels. It's still a remarkable story and TJ's role in sheltering her initially should be retold for our newbies.

OK call me a wuss. I just turned on the furnace. I tried to make it until Oct.1, but after over 48 hours at less then 51*(10*C) even I gave in. It stinks, like the first toasted dust if the season. Worse this year due to the construction dust.
I'm starting to worry about TJ, he has just been nibbling at his food the last couple of days and burrowing into the comforter for the rest of the day. He just sat up for the first time in 7 hours. Changing of the guard, TJ out and Onyx in. Onyx is a bit in the doghouse, she brought the little birdie she caught onto the deck about a foot from the door so I could watch her enjoy her treat. When I had the courage to check on the situation, an hour later, there was nothing left but a few tail feathers. She lost some of her angelic qualities today.

I'm really concerned about TJ. He hasn't been eating normally since Sunday pm. There is evidence around his neck and throat that he has been in a tussle recently. I can find no evidence of injury. He won't let me brush him, but he has been very needy the last couple of days--sleeping in whatever room i am in and asking to be petted every time he gets up to move. Come to think of it, Onyx has been needy the past few days, too. I did see the neighbors' Prozac cat roaming the neighborhood this past weekend. i wish I knew what is up. I know he is a very old cat and will someday cross the rainbow bridge, but I hope it not soon.

Sharing--The kitchen crew came to bring the FINAL bill! YEA!!! In spite of having a stranger in his house TJ came in and loudly demanded his supper. NOW. He got his fancy feast and ate it all in about ten minutes. He is in recovery! Maybe it was mostly his bruised ego.

UGH! Onyx brought another "snack" onto the deck. This time it is a mouse. At least when TJ would bring mousie gifts he would leave them intact, Onyx brings them up and then chows down right in front of me. Looks like I'll be using my new broom sooner than anticipated. I guess this will cut the cost if cat food.

We dug up about a 50' by 4' bed of iris today, cleaned the deck and patio, took a load of junk to the city dump. I did the laundry this morning but i don't think I have the energy to make the bed. Maybe I'll find some in the next few hours. When I find the energy I want to take a shower. I feel like Pigpen of Peanuts fame. There is so much dirt on my face , hair and mouth that when I clench my teeth i can feel dirt crunch. I'm half afraid I'll wash off so much dirt the drains will clog and I'll have to see the plumber, again. We got all of the Iris trimmed and ready to plant tomorrow. I also got enough iris starts to give to friends and start four more huge beds. i'm not going to let this job get so big next time.
TJ and Onyx supervised from a long distance all afternoon and just now decided to come in. I think i have the energy to take a shower now--otherwise I'll gross you all out.

Eeeks! Guess that was a tad long. Okay. I'll delete it in the morning.
SES_, teh mom, Whaaaaaaaaaaaa! Nugget, out for all of eight minutes, has brought something to the kitchen door that looks decidedly bigger than a vole. Oh please help me now! Winter cannot come soon enough, grrrrrrrrrr. Aren't these things supposed to be hibernating? If he's done in a chipmunk again, but to be truthful, oh Lord have mercy, it looks like a baby skunk. Ghhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaahhh! Pets! Kids! I want OUT! Sad

OOOhhhhhhhhhhh. I hurt in places I didn't know I could hurt. At least I didn't have to call the plumber after my shower, and it felt so wonderful. Onyx has been exploring the newly prepped iris beds and thinks she has two newly created outside litter boxes. At least this afternoon I'll be done with this project for the next five years or so.
